You Get Out What You Put In<\/h2>\n
Every so often I get stuck in neutral. I coast along, doing things the same old way I\u2019ve always done them. Then I notice something falling off\u2026the quality of a relationship, the amount of business I\u2019m doing, my health, and so on. \u00a0Am I missing something? \u00a0Should I be paying more attention to something? \u00a0Now there’s a novel thought – paying more attention.<\/p>\n
When that happens, I\u2019m reminded of a little story I once read, that I\u2019d like to share with you. It\u2019s from motivational speaker Zig Ziglar who\u2019s telling a story about his friend, Walter Hailey.<\/p>\n
The story goes that although Hailey became a star salesman in later life, his early career as an insurance salesman was rough. He endured frustration, anxiety, slammed doors, low sales figures, and uncertainty about his future.<\/p>\n
Paying More Attention<\/h2>\n
One day he grew so discouraged that he went to his boss and told him he was going to quit. His boss\u2019s response? \u201cYou can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hailey repeated that he was quitting. The manager repeated, \u201cYou can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
Angry now, Hailey shouted, \u201cYes, I can!\u201d<\/p>\n
His manager replied, \u201cWalter, you can\u2019t get out of the insurance business because you have never really gotten into the insurance business.\u201d<\/p>\n
The words hit Hailey like a ton of bricks. For the first time in his life he realized that you can\u2019t get something out of an endeavor if you never put anything into it. Or as Ziglar says, \u201cThere are many people who \u2018join\u2019 a sales organization, but never get into the business of selling.\u201d<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve taken this to heart, and apply it everywhere in my life with wonderful results, not just in my business. Whenever I\u2019m starting to get results I don\u2019t like, I take it as a sign that I\u2019m losing my focus. It\u2019s a sign to start paying more attention!<\/p>\n
