Florida Keys to Reopen October 1<\/h1>\n

The Florida Keys will reopen to tourists starting October 1. This is about three weeks earlier than expected, according to the Miami Herald<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Large chunks of the popular vacation destination were decimated by Hurricane Irma. Moreover, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has reported that 25 percent of all homes in the Florida Keys were destroyed. 65 percent sustained major damage.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know we have a long way to go before the Keys fully recover,\u201d added Monroe County Mayor George Neugent in a statement. \u201cBut because tourism is our top economic engine and many of our residents\u2019 livelihoods depend on it, we also know we need to begin asking visitors to return.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bridges are open for travel. \u00a0Hospitals have reopened. \u00a0The Key West airport resumed commercial service. Additionally, power has been restored in roughly 99.8 percent of the state, according to FPL<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The wildly popular Fantasy Fest, a Key West staple, remains scheduled for October 20-29.<\/p>\n
